TTS stands for text-to-speech and is a speech synthesis application, computer-generated simulation of human speech, that converts text on a device into spoken content. Most technology devices have the built-in ability to read the text, but they need additional support that takes care of the reading aloud of the text. If an Apple Books AI narrated version is created, authors are allowed to produce a human-narrated version later, and can freely generate other audiobook versions with other distributors.ĪI narration is particularly appealing proposition to small independent writers, who do not have the capital to pay for human talent and the associated recording process required for classical human book narration. In order to convert any Ebook into an audiobook for free, you need to make sure you have the correct software to interpret the text. The author must own the rights to produce an audiobook version, and (for now) the source book must be written in the English language. The transformation into an AI-narrated audiobook is done on a wholly opt-in basis. It seems like Apple and its partners are manually reviewing the generated AI tracks for quality assurance before publishing, at least in the early stages. In fact, Apple says it can take about a month for a submitted book to be made available in synthesized form. Generation of the audiobook is not an automatic one-button-press affair. Although you can probably still tell that the audio is generated rather than recorded by a human, they are very convincing and even higher fidelity than the quality of the realtime machine learning synthesised voice used for Siri. You can hear samples of what these AI voices sound like here. Other genres of book like science fiction or thrillers are not currently supported. Fiction and romance books are narrated by “Madison” and “Jackson’.” Non-fiction and self-development genre books will be narrated by “Helena” and “Mitchell.” Each genre of book is accompanied by a particular AI voice. Interestingly, Apple is targeting specific genres for this initial rollout. In the Apple Books app, AI audiobooks are tagged with a “Narrated by Apple Books” subtitle. It is inviting independent writers and larger publishers to opt-in to have their written books converted into audio form using AI voice synthesis models.Īpple announced the scheme towards the end of last year, and - as noted by The Guardian - the first AI-narrated books are now available to download in the Apple Books Store. Apple Books has launched a new initiative to expand the number of audiobooks available on its store.

It could've pushed these mechanics further though, and the puzzles in the latter half of the game could've been more complex. It's a short game, clocking in at a little over 2 hours, but Superliminal makes pretty good use of it's mechanics in that short runtime the game manages to pack in a good number of satisfying puzzles plus a neat little story with a nice message that ties in to the game's themes perfectly. They're a little difficult to explain, but it's very intuitive when playing the game - for the most part, what it boils down to is that you can manipulate the size of some objects, and duplicate some others. The puzzles are good fun and are fairly original thanks to the game's unique mechanics. It's a short game, Superliminal is a smart, inventive puzzle game all about perspective. "Between Us All" is the result of it all, tied together and masterfully mixed by another Radar, Ethan Walter, who also lays down some bass on the LP. Meanwhile, Cleary started recording his own songs with Hussey, Putnam, and Phil Manley (Trans Am, Terry Gross), who had also recorded The Movies 2nd album, "American Oil." The LP got high critical praise and landed direct support tours with Modest Mouse, Teenage Fanclub and Overseas. Cleary co-wrote and played keys on Radars’ 2013 release, "Eight" (Merge). Soon after, Radar Brothers front man Jim Putnam snagged Movies drummer Stevie Treichel and Cleary for a new lineup of the band with Be Hussey on bass. Cleary played keys and co-wrote a handful of fan favorites for the Movies. Their song, “Creation Lake” was covered by old stage-mates, Silversun Pickups 2005. The Movies released three albums and won LA Weekly’s “Best Rock Band” in 2005. In 1999, the three formed The Movies (Gern Blandsten, Houston Party) after James last band, The Vehicle Birth broke up. It was around this time he started jamming with friends Timothy James and Jessica Gelt. Cleary played at a few space rock festivals in Boston. He also broke out his old effect pedals and bought a keyboard and started playing out as Very, a solo/experimental outing he still indulges. As it happens, it all came crashing down pretty hard.Īt the dawn of the 90’s, Cleary moved to Boston where he’d reconnect with family, go to college and rediscover his talents by sneaking into the music rooms at BU at night to commune with the grand pianos. He spent the next 5 years playing keys for the band, surfing, hosting several radio shows at the local college station and immersing himself into the extremes and madness of the 24-hour party that was Melbourne Beach, FL in the 80’s. This was Florida’s ‘Space Coast.’ Cleary was a teen in a very decadent scene of 20-something surfers where drugs literally floated onto the beach. (He at least kept his word on the second part.) The band held his spot until Cleary turned 14 and he’d convinced his parents that if they got him a keyboard he wouldn’t drop out of school and die of a drug overdose. The album, also featuring members of Radar Brothers, Eels and Trans Am was released Octowith a CD release party at Highland Park Bowl in Los Angeles.Ĭleary got into his first band, Locals Only by playing Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer”-solos and all-on piano for the band’s guitarist. "Between Us All" is the first album from Strange Parade, brainchild of keyboardist and songwriter Brian Cleary, former keyboardist and co-songwriter of Radar Brothers (Merge) and The Movies (Houston Party / Gern Blandsten). |
